however if you're clever with bouncing down your clips in live so that there's no warping going on in real time and likewise burn your fx into the clips in resolume and run at 720p you will have no problems running your set on one machine.

if you have tons of clips set to complex pro and many layers of full hd video running in resolume you will want to run resolume on another machine. I am running resolume and live on the same dual core 2.93ghz 17" MBP but the performance will ultimately be related to how many clips you have running concurrently in live and how many layers you are using in resolume and at what resolution.

if you think playing electronic music live is fun wait till you are able to perform the visual at the same time. beware though it does get VERY addictive. With a cleverly programmed template in live you can make sure that any change you make to your audio in a live performance will result in something harmonious happening with your visuals too.

by doing this i can jump between full manual control of either the audio or the visuals using my faderfoxes and monome or let things run along pre-programmed automations simply by firing off groups of clips with follow actions. so ableton acts not only as the audio brain but the main controller for the visuals by using midi clips of note triggers and controller envelopes mapped to various functions in resolume. Personally i programmed everything through an ableton template. so yes, once you grasp what resolume does you can make some very interesting visual elements out of almost any 's got some basic 3d shapes to map footage onto but don't expect to be able to get deep into 3d as you could with cinema 4d and such like. although it's not hard to get resolume up and running to run clips in sync, there is a lot of power under the hood and you can go very deep with it.Īlthough it's not first and foremost a content creator you can get very interesting results by masking out elements of a video clip, resampling it, duping it up in various points in your composition, resampling again through fx and programming those various elements to move around your frame.

and personally i think it's the best vj soft if you want to work in tandem with ableton.

i chose it after experimenting with modul8, livid union and archaos grand vj. That aside, as a live user you should get to grips with it fairly easily as it follows a similar clip grid paradigm with built in time-stretching and fx slots. if you don't see yourself needing to do any of those things now or in the future then get avenue. arena has a built in screenwarp and slice and transform function that enables you to create a "map" and direct individual layers to individual slices and project that material onto 3d objects. however i know that the main draw for arena is if you want to get into projection mapping, use smpte sync for lights, lasers and pyros or control it using a dmx lighting desk. i've been travelling for the past couple of years so although i have arena sitting on my mbp i haven't yet delved into it to see all the extras it has over avenue. Regarding projection: If the venue doesn't have the necessary projectors (many don't!), how feasible is it to use a normal home theater one and a wall? They also offer the much more expensive Resolume Arena, but I didn't quite understand what it offers over Avenue.

So how good and varied are they? Are there free presets out there? How much is the cost of good payed ones? I've seen that there is a sort of preset ecosystem for Resolume, and while I don't use presets in my music, I would probably like to take that helping hand at least in the beginning for video. How easy is the program to use for simple visuals? (I want to keep spending most of my time on making music)Ĭan you also compose the visuals in the program or can you only manipulate existing video? (I have an old Macbook Core2Duo too, but that one has only integrated graphics, so I guess that's out of the question as the Resolume machine.?!) Since Live is not really using the GPU it can hog as much of that as it wants for all I care. (I'm using a Quadcore i7 MBP with 16 gigs of Ram an SSD and a NVidia GForce GT 650M with 512 MB of Ram) How CPU heavy is it? I would like to be as save from crackles in Live as possible in a live situation, so this matters a lot!

Resolume Avenue appears to be the software of choice and it's still somewhat affordable.Īny of you have experience with that program? I'm sure some of you here are doing the same. I've gotten interested in doing visuals accompanying my music, but hooking up with local amateur VJs has proven difficult.
